Personal Update on Chris

Some of you might remember that a few months ago I lost my job as the company “right sized”(politically correct for “down sized”). In the months since, I have really tried hard to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up, as I really want out of IT and want to find something that I enjoy. A friend suggested I think about becoming a firearms instructor. Long story short, I have decided to do just that.

I met a gentleman who works as an instructor at a local range. He told me that if I wanted to make any money at this, I would need to start my own company, as the instructors where he works make a fraction of what the range charges. I have always wanted to be my own boss, so I’m going to give it a shot. I prayed for years for God to show me what my calling was, and I really feel like it is teaching people to be prepared, both with preparedness and through teaching people how to use a firearm to protect themselves and their families.

There are still a lot of things up in the air, but I have decided to take some training classes and get some NRA certifications. These will allow me to work toward being certified to teach a CCW class. I am going to offer two; one normal and one with an added Christian worldview if people want it. I plan to offer some NRA courses like Personal Protection in the Home and Personal Protection Outside of the Home. I have thought of something I haven’t seen anyone else offer; I will offer to go into someone’s home and help them apply the things they have learned in training. I will also help them make their home a harder target, applying things I highlighted in Home Security Inside and Out.

My target market is the person who wants to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones, but might not necessarily be into the tactical side of things. Advanced handgun training will be available, but there are already so many companies catering to that crowd, I thought I would take a different approach.

I haven’t decided on a name yet, but am toying with “Practical Defense”. What do you think?

Most of the training and certifications I will be taking will be here in Minnesota, but I will have to travel for some of the training, and will be gone for the week of July 4th , taking an advanced handgun course to help sharpen my skills with I.C.E Training. Later this summer I will be gone for another few days for an intensive Front Sight course.

I must develop the curriculum for the CCW course and submit it along with my NRA certification to the Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) to become licensed to teach the Minnesota carry course. Due to training and course development, as well as figuring out which type of LLC or other business type to create as well as creating the website, I will have limited time for writing. I am still going to write as much as I can but I have decided to incorporate more guest posts than I have thus far. To be clear, I am not giving up on the website! I plan to return to being the main writer after I get the new venture off the ground.

Thank you to those who’ve been praying for me. Your prayers are very much appreciated. If you feel so led, would you please pray for wisdom and guidance? Thanks again for all of your support!

Current Projects at Prepared Christian

I want to thank those of you who have been praying for me and the other employees that were recently let go. I was a bit frustrated the first day or two, but I haven’t worried at all. I know Jesus is in control and that He has a plan for me. I have been blessed and humbled by the number of people who have interceded in prayer on my behalf. Thank you again!

Today I want to share with you two projects that I’ve been working on for some time now. Since I seem to have more free time all of the sudden, I have a bit more time to dedicate to getting them ready to share with you.

The first project is an eBook. It will cover much of the material I cover on the blog, with some new. I have been asked a few times if I could give a condensed version of all posts so that people can print them. This is my answer to that. For that reason, it will be text heavy and there will only be pictures if they are needed to explain something.

I’m roughly 2/3 of the way through writing it, and hope to have it available for download in the next couple of months. I haven’t set a price, but it will be very reasonable.

The second project is something I am calling a Preparedness Club. It will be a premium membership that will offer discounts to some very big name companies that have agreed to support the Preparedness Club. If you even make a modest amount of preparedness related purchases, the membership to the Preparedness Club should pay for itself.

Here are some of the benefits of joining the Preparedness Club:

  • Support Chris and the Prepared Christian.net ministry
  • Discounts to several preparedness vendors
  • Chance at monthly giveaways (There will be a minimum of one giveaway a month and several vendors have already donated some cool prizes!)
  • 50% off all Future Prepared Christian eBooks

I haven’t settled on a price for the Preparedness Cub as of yet either but it, too, will be reasonable. I plan to have yearly and monthly memberships available. I would like to bring on a few more supporting companies before launching the Preparedness Club but I hope to be ready to launch in the next few weeks.

If you have a way that you would like to support the Preparedness Club, whether it be a discount on products or services your company offers (doesn’t have to be preparedness related), a free or discounted eBook, or any other way, please contact me at chris(at)preparedchristian(dot)net!

I recently had my second interview with Sylvia from the 21st Century HomeKeeper Radio Show. I will post the link when the show has been made available, we discussed a couple recent blog posts of mine on Frugal Preparedness, and Rules for Extended Guests.

I will also be interviewed by James Talmage Stevens (AKA Doctor Prepper), the author of Making the Best of Basics on his weekly podcast. You’ll find his book reviewed here. I’ll post a link to this interview once it goes live as well.

Thank you again for the prayer and well wishes. They are truly appreciated.

A Quick Personal Update

I have a quick prayer request. I, along with 11 co-workers, was let go from my job yesterday. While I’m trained in IT (computer geek), I’ve grown tired of the field and I’ve decided to use this opportunity to take a different path. If you feel led, please pray for wisdom for me and for God’s plan to unfold before me.

Thank you in advance,

Chris

Some of the things I am thankful for

Today is Thanksgiving, the day set aside to give thanks for the bounty that God has given us.  I thought I would share some of the things I am thankful for.

I’m thankful for a loving and supportive wife, someone who understands me better than anyone else.  I’m thankful for family and friends who love me.

I’m grateful that God prompted me to create this website, and for all of you for visiting, you are the reason for writing each week.  Thank you!

I’m thankful for the calm before the storm, for a chance to better prepare and to have more time to reach others.

I’m grateful for the thorns in my side, so I can be more appreciative of the days without them.

I’m also grateful for being born in this great nation and having so many opportunities.    I’m grateful that even though our leaders in Washington are out of touch with the wishes of the people, we serve a sovereign God who is in control.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, what are you thankful for?

Getting to know Chris

This week I have touched a little on community. I’m enjoying getting to know those of you who e-mail and post comments and I thought I would share a little about myself. I posted a while back about Friday content. If any of you want to answer these questions and send them to me I’ll post them as time allows. If you have an online business or blog you want to mention, feel free.

1. What do you do for a living?
a. I am level 2 client side IT for a large company in the medical industry.

2. If you could do anything you wanted for a living, what would that be?
a. I would own a large acreage set up with permaculture, gardening and livestock. I would have training facilities and cabins set up so that people could come for a weekend or longer and learn preparedness, homesteading and permaculture, outdoor skills and more. I don’t own all of these skill sets so I would have guest instructors. I would then document what I have learned via the blog. Hey! A guy can dream!

3. What is your favorite book?
a. Anything written by Raymond E. Feist. I’m a fantasy nerd, so what? 😉

4. What is your favorite movie?
a. Braveheart or the Lord of the Rings movies.

5. What is your favorite food?
a. Right now it is Wasa Crisp bread with peanut butter and banana.

6. What is your favorite time of the year?
a. The fall. I like sweatshirt weather and the changing of the leaves.

7. If you could vacation anywhere, where would that be?
a. I know of a cabin that is only one of two on a lake with plenty of peace and quiet and fish to catch.

8. What is your favorite fun thing to do?
a. Video games, I just wish I had more time to play.

9. If you could have lunch with anyone alive, or dead, who would it be and why?
a. Jesus or my grandpa. Jesus because I have so many questions and my grandpa because I miss him.

10. If you were the President for one day, what would you do?
a. 3 laws; One is a flat consumption tax of 10-15%. Two is that congress must read every stinking word of every bill they try to pass and no bill could be larger than 5 pages. Third, drug test for welfare. If I have to take one to get a job to pay for welfare, they’re going to take one to collect it. (saw the last one on Facebook)

11. What is your favorite kind of music?
a. I like many different kinds; rock, contemporary Christian, blues, classical, a little country. I don’t listen to the radio, so I don’t know that I could name one of the top 40 artists.

12. What is one example of how God moved in your life?
a. My wife and I have a good marriage. I give the credit for that to God. When things get hard, we go to Him.

13. How long have you been a prepper?
a. Seven years or so.

14. What is your biggest speed bump in prepping?
a. Money, as I am sure it is for most.

15. Would you call yourself a prepper, homesteader, survivalist or (add something else)?
a. Prepper, but would love to be able to call myself a homesteader one day.

16. What is the one prep item you want but don’t have?
a. A bug out location, hence a prepper and not a homesteader.

17. What is your number one reason for prepping?
a. I see the shape the world is in and do not want to be dependent on anyone to feed, or protect my family.

18. What got you started in preparedness?
a. The short answer is that I firmly believe the Lord told me to. The long answer, maybe some other time.

19. Which type of event concerns you the most?
a. Pandemic. With almost all other event’s, small or large, there is action that can be taken to mitigate their impact. With a pandemic, there isn’t much we can do besides isolate ourselves and pray a vaccine is found.

20. What is one thing people wouldn’t know about you?
a. I have Asperger Syndrome. For those who don’t know, Asperger’s is a high functioning form of Autism. There are many different things that go along with Asperger’s. One of which is social awkwardness and not picking up on social queues.

I’m usually a very private person, but I wanted to let you know for a couple of reasons; my wife acts as an editor for all of the articles that get posted. She does the normal editor tasks; spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. Because of the Asperger’s, I come across a little mechanical at times. My wife softens my words on those occasions.

We both make sure that the context never gets changed. The other reason I’m telling you is because I post to Facebook, answer e-mail and reply to comments on the blog on my own, so if things come across a little different, that’s why.

One of the symptoms of Asperger’s is being intensely focused or obsessed with a topic, for me that topic is preparedness and this blog. I spend a significant amount of time dedicated to both, keeping a balance can take effort. That is partly because it might sound weird, but I find great joy in researching, learning and writing about the things I have learned.

Some of you have posted comments or sent e-mails thanking me for this blog. While I appreciate the compliments, the way I see it, I just do the typing, God deserves the credit. I’m not a writer by nature but I enjoy sharing with all of you. The fact that anyone shows up to read what I write is humbling. I am truly grateful for all of you and look forward to meeting all of you, in this world or when we all get home.
