Dreams, Prophecy and Promptings

“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”

This verse comes from Joel 2:28 and again from Acts 2:17.  It is a promise from God that He will pour out His spirit, which will give visions, dreams and cause some to prophecy.  Since starting Prepared Christian I have been blessed to receive emails from several of you who have shared dreams you have had or prophecies that have been given at your church or from ministries you interact with on the Internet.  I want to take some time to discuss this with you.

I think this is important because I know that some of you have been led to preparedness by a dream you have had or a loved one has had, or by prophecies given by someone you trust.  Sometimes we feel prompted by God to take an action to be more prepared.

The word dream is mentioned in scripture 65 times; all but seven of those are in the Old Testament.  Dreams are clearly one way that God chooses to speak to us; I think this is for various reasons.  Dreams bypass the logical part of our brain that can quash the still small voice.  Dreams can also be used to introduce things that we are not yet familiar with.  They can be used to push us to take action on something we may or may not fully understand.

Scripture lists dreams given to people that were a concrete example of what would occur, examples of this appear in Mathew 1:20, when an angel appears to Joseph in a dream and tells him that the child Mary caries was conceived by the Holy Spirit.  Again in Mathew 2:12 the three wise men receive a dream that warns them not to go back to Herod.  An angel comes to Joseph again in Mathew 2:13 to tell him to take Mary and Jesus and escape to Egypt.  Joseph was visited in a dream again in Mathew 2:19, telling him of Herod’s death.

More often, dreams from the Lord are far more abstract and need interpretation to understand.  For instance; the dream God gave to Pharaoh that is explained to Joseph in Genesis 41:15 of the seven fat cows, then seven scrawny and lean cows that Joseph interpreted for him to mean seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine.  Another example is found in Judges 7:13.  Gideon overhears a man telling of a dream that a round loaf of barley bread tumbled into the Midianite camp with such force it collapsed a tent.  The man listening to this dream interpreted it to mean that the loaf of bread was the sword of Gideon son of Joash.  Gideon used this knowledge to invade and conquer the Midianite camp.  Again, in Daniel 2:30, King Nebuchadnezzar has Daniel interpret the dream of a giant statue, King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4:11 has Daniel interpret the dream of the giant tree.

Sometimes the meaning of a dream may be abstract, even if the dream itself is not.  An example of this could be the dreams given to Joseph in the book of Genesis.  In these dreams, Joseph interpreted his brothers and parents bowing down to him.  While Joseph became second in command, only lower than Pharaoh, God, at one point, had Joseph thrown into a cistern, sold into slavery and put in prison before interpreting Pharaohs dream and being given much power.  He used this power to save his family.

The point I am trying to make is that sometimes the dreams we have are from God.  Some of those dreams will actually happen exactly like they did in the dream, as it was many times with Joseph.  Some dreams might show us symbolic events, with the end result being similar to the dream, as it was with Joseph and his dreams of his family bowing down to him.  The dream could just be used to spark you into taking action, like Gideon did when hearing of the interpreted dream.

I have received e-mails from people who say they have had dreams of the economy crashing and violence everywhere.  I have received emails foretelling of the electric grid going out and society falling apart.  I have also gotten an email where the person dreamed that a large volcano (I assume it was the caldera in Yellowstone) erupted, destroying much of America and covering much of the US is ash.  I have also read prophecies from my church and other ministries that speak to some very difficult times ahead.  If all of these are true and come to pass, not only America but much of the world will suffer greatly.  In fact, if the caldera in Yellowstone erupted, it very well could be an ELE (Extinction Level Event).  I suppose it is possible that all of these things could happen, but even one happening is a very low possibility, let alone all three.

Prophecy is something I find interesting and have studied.  I have read Biblical prophecies and some by modern day prophets.  The modern prophecies that I have read are often a little vague.  Maybe the prophet is only allowed, as John the Revelator was, to show certain things, keeping some things hidden.  Maybe the entire sequence of events was not revealed to the prophet, or maybe the prophet is afraid of being too specific, fearing the events will not unfolding as they said.

I have visited forums where current events were forced into prophecy.  I have also seen very godly men led to believe a false prophet.  I learned a lesson when I started studying prophecy; if a prophet is wrong even once, they are not a prophet sent by God.  God is never wrong.

If I met a prophet who was always right, who lived a godly life and loved the Lord, I would listen and heed his words.  Until then, I will listen and put their words to the tests of scripture and time to see if they’re right.

Most of the time, I have a very difficult time knowing if a prompting is from the Lord.  There are other times when I have no doubt.  I’m going to share something personal with all of you and I hesitate to do so, partly because I am very private, and partly because I think it could invite some conflict.  I think it is a good example of how sometimes God prompts us and uses things we understand at the time, only to have events unfold differently than originally thought.

Years ago I had read all of the Left Behind books and really studied the book of Revelation and other prophecies in the Bible.  This is also around the same time I started prepping.  I remember feeling like God was asking me to stay behind after the Rapture to help new believers learn about salvation, and to help them survive the coming judgments to the earth.

Years later I began to feel the Lord stirring again.  This time it was to help believers to learn that preparedness is Biblical and how to get better prepared now.  I wasn’t sure how to do this and sat on it for another couple years.  I finally started writing some pretty awful articles and emailing them to friends.  Then, God used Jack Spirko from the Survival Podcast to spark me into starting the Prepared Christian blog.

My point here is that even though all of the promptings were from God, in the beginning I did not have enough knowledge to teach others about preparedness.  Knowing I would need that knowledge, I began my research and better preparing my family.  Through writing those awful letters to my friends, I hopefully have gotten to be a better writer.  I still didn’t know how to “get the word out” until I heard Jack Spirko that day.  That began my research into blogging and using the Internet.  I now believe God used my understanding of things in the beginning to get me to take the action needed to do what I am doing now.  It was my understanding of things that changed, not Gods plan.

Final Thoughts:

Though God does use dreams, prophecy and promptings, they may not always mean what we think they mean.  Don’t cling so tightly to your understanding that God can’t unfold His plan.  Yes He is more powerful than you, but He loves you enough to yield to your free will.

  1. Nice post, Chris. I’m new to the preparedness movement and to your blog. I really appreciate the humility with which you write. You come across as a learner who wants to encourage and equip other learners, rather than as a self-proclaimed expert. That’s refreshing, and it actually enhances your credibility.

    • Thank you Denny. I am glad you have begun to prepare, and that you found the site. I guess the reason I come off like that is that I don’t see myself as an expert, just someone who has learned a few things and likes to share with those who are newer to preparedness.

  2. Very Powerful article Chris, thank you. I know 2 years ago I felt an overwhelming urge to get prepared. As I am still a young Christian I had to ask a dear and trusted friend who happens to be a very mature Christian what she thought it meant. Her reply was always to pray about everything, so I did and the urge just keep getting stronger to stockpile food, water and medical supplies. I still have the same urge just not nearly as strong. It seems the more I prepare the less I fill this urge. To me I truly believe it is GOD speaking to me telling me hard times are coming. As I have told my husband nothing will go to waste as we can use everything we have stored and when he retires at least we wont have groceries to purchase. He now also feels the unction to be prepared so I do feel that the Lord is telling those who will listen to him, hard times are coming and to be ready. Thanks Chris for all that you do and God Bless You and your family.

    • Thanks Suni. I agree, I prayed about everything in the beginning, and still do on things I am unsure of. I have been at this long enough to know when I am acting out of faith for the future vs fear in the now.

  3. Wow! Great article and timely.

  4. Thank you for your article today. Last night was the first night I actually had a dream about getting prepared. Your blog only came to my attention about a week ago and today’s article is very timely and an excellent confirmation for me. I have been feeling a prompting, I believe from the Holy Spirit, to begin to prepare. It is nice when God confirms his promptings through the wisdom of other Christians and His Word.

    • Hi Rachel, I am glad you got confirmation, it is strange and fantastic how the Lord works. I’m glad you were led to prepared and also the the blog.

  5. Matthew 2 “there came wise men from the east” it does not said 3 Nowhere does it say three. We sing about 3 , but that is in a song. Nowhere in the Bible does it say there where 3.. I think I am right.
    Keep up the good work

    • Fair enough. I believe people think three because that is how many gift were listed, if there where more, why wouldn’t they have brought gifts as well?

      • The gifts were listed were of specific purpose and symbolism. There may have been other gifts as well

gold – a gift for royalty – recognizing the kingship of the child
frankincense – used in temple worship – recognizing the deity of the child
myrrh – an expensive spice often used as a burial spice – for his early death.

  6. The dream I had about the volcano was, I believe, a super volcano because the U.S was off the political map. We were reeling, trying to get ourselves together from the disaster. There was a huge ash cloud over us although the eastern parts weren’t as badly effected. The main focus of the dream though wasn’t America it was what was going on politically in Europe. The only reason why I knew a volcano erupted was because I asked, “What happened to my people? Where are they in all this?” Anyway God bless. We’ll need it. Especially Europe…

    • That is very interesting. Do you remember what was going on in Europe?

      • There was an ash cloud over the U.S but there was absolute SMOG over Europe. I mean the emotional and spiritual kind. They were groaning and afraid because of the oppression of their government. Closer tabs were being kept on everything, I mean they were always being watched by sirvalence and the corruption was terrible. The people were definately being affected by the environmental troubles but the leaders took advantage and a new Capitol, a new seat of power, was being decided because of the shift of a politics. It landed in Great Britain. Before I woke up a terrible feeling settled over me, worse than the shock of seeing all the other things go on, because out of the smog I saw a man rise up with a terrible darkness in him. With the feeling I got it was like “anti Christ”. He looked right at me and I woke up. I felt safe, but it was pretty intense. I don’t know the span of time before events, but I saw the birth pangs.

        • Wow what a dream, I wish I could remember mine with that level of detail.

          • It was sealed into my memory I can see it like it was yesterday, like the others. I’ve had other dreams too that were from the Lord but they usually have symbolism. With this one it was like, “No really. A volcano.” turns out we’re getting a lot of volcanic activity or hints as to what is to come. Scientists say we’re long over due too but when ever I think about it I feel Gods hands. Doesn’t matter how late the show is He does the scheduling 😉

  7. I would like to add my personal experience that I think illustrates what you and others are saying. Back in Dec 1999 I felt a need to stockpile groceries prior to the Y2K thing because of all of the uncertainty. The clock ticked over and nothing happened and honestly I felt a little silly for having done it. But then in Feb or March 2000 my husband lost his job of 20 years and everything we had was needed, used and nothing went to waste. So though it wasn’t for the specific circumstance I was expecting, it was still for a reason I was not aware of at the time. I began to feel that urge again 2-3 years ago only much stronger this time. I feel that’s it’s something I’m being led to do and now I know it may not be for the reasons I think. It might be for my family but it’s also occured to me that it might be for someone or something else. All I know is that I’ve learned to trust that inner voice and if nothing else will make a great donation to a food pantry. I’m very grateful to have a husband that’s on board with it as well. The kids think we’re a little nuts but they are beginning to see the light because of recent events and even as a slight buffer to inflation. This is nothing our great-great grandparents didn’t do in the old days to get through a long winter. Anyone who grocery stops can’t deny the rising prices so I see the wisdom in having a few months worth put away. I think it’s simply being prepared for whatever comes and being in a position to help others as well.

  8. Hamilton Chant says:

    Chris – Wow!
    fantastic article

I recall a dream I had many years ago when still a teenager. In which I was playing football with a group of friends and then, I was spirited away and found myself within an enormous glass-like dome – there were many others there also and we ran from side to side pointing, shouting and gazing at the beauty of Gods creation layed out before us.
For years this just seemed like a pleasant if very moving dream, then recently while watching revelation TV (a UK christian tv station), The presenter began to recall a dream he had, had many years before and recount how moved he was by the experience. It was an absolute copy of my own vivid experience almost word for word and image for image.
I like you have always just known I am ment to remain behind and serve our lord here – I believe this dream was my taster of the rapture that others will see and experience for real. If this is indeed so, then to have just glimpsed that wonderous place even for a small time is enough to sustain me through any trials that may await us who remain to serve him, here on earth.

  9. Bravo my Friend! Great article. Good word! Thank You!
Indeed, He does prepare the Called! (no pun intended)

  10. Chris,

I don’t know you or your position, but most likely the Lord did not instruct you to stay behind. It is more lively he was instructing you that you would be ‘left behind,’ as all truly born again, Spirit-filled believers will. I do appreciate — DEEPLY — your efforts to awaken multiplied Christians across America to the truth of God’s Word.

I am convinced Scripture teaches clearly all who are true believers in Jesus Christ will go through much tribulation.

When we take the Bible at it’s clearly stated truth, we can only recognize it teaches Christians will go through the ‘tribulation.’ It is when we begin to ‘wrest’ the scriptures can we make it say what multitudes of modern Christians believe — that we will be raptured out of this world prior to the tribulation.

My work, ‘Discovery to Catastrophe,’ has just been published (Xlibris) and is available through the major internet book sellers. It interweaves biblical truth in and through a fictional story as a small handful of believers discover what the Bible really teaches. They then struggle to deal with it and prepare for what they will have to face when they are no longer able to buy/sell.

I believe it will be an eye opening read about why God is leading so many people to prepare for what we are soon to face.

    • Jerry,

you are correct, I no longer believe that the Lord had asked me to stay behind, but that He used my understanding of His word at the time to get me to take action.

Your book sounds very interesting, I’ll look into it.

  11. Every time God destroys nations He preserves His word and a remnant. It’s important that we as believers should know how to disciple men and nations. And teach our children and grandchildren to do the same. If it’s God’s good pleasure you may just be the remnant. So we must be prepared.

  12. There was a prophecy spoken over me during a prayer some 25 years ago…I pondered it at the time, then it just went into the back of my mind….until some time last year when the Lord brought it back to my attention! Five years ago, I felt the “urge” to start farming—both livestock and fruits/vegetables. It has become a marvelous lifestyle, full of learning and spiritual peace. I’ve been drawn into such activities as making yogurt, cheese, and soap from my herd’s goat’s milk. I can, freeze, and dehydrate fruits and vegetables from the garden. I raise pigs, chickens, waterfowl…..etc. I’ve gathered tools and equipment to do farming MANUALLY, including grain grinders, meat grinders, coffee grinders, solar ovens, water purification items…….you get the idea. I am putting food by for a huge family of 16 people and am enjoying the whole experience as I sense God’s presence in all I am doing. The prophecy from 25 years ago???? The Spirit of the Lord said quite simply: “You Will Be A Joseph.” Praise God!

  13. I just found this site and read this article, I find it interesting because I find myself promted to do things and I never knew what it was until I read this. Sometimes I will see something in the morning before I go to work, think I should grab it and don’t and sometime during the day I will need that item. One day I was prompted to begin prepping. At first I wondered if I was losing my mind but I kept on, I then started talking to my family about it and they thought I was crazy, now they are all on board. I have just started saving food, gathering seeds, tools and other items, we have a place in the country in another state taht would be a perfect place to have to stay and start over. We plan on preparing that place for when we have to leave our home in the city. Never disreguard the messages you receive.

    • Chris Ray says:

Hi Julie, welcome to the site, I am glad you found it. I’m also glad that you listened to the prompting to prepare, it will be a blessing to you and your family.

  14. I too have felt the urge to prepare. I think one has only to open their eyes to see, that things are going to come to a head. I have such a strong feeling that we are headed for a significant economic collapse. we bought a hundred acres and for the last two years we have steadily worked on becoming debt free. Last week I started feeling led to stock my pantry. My husband and I drive a truck and I have talked to so many people that have said things like I started canning this year and I have never wanted to. Dozens of people getting out of debt like we are trying to. I told my husband recently do you ever “feel” like something is coming? It tiill feels distant like the far off plane that you can barely hear. Ive wondered for a while now how many other christians felt this draw or if I was alone in my feelings. I hesitate to speak to much to others because tv makes preparedness seem like your a freak if you do. I often say god, you need to hit me over the head with it because sometimes I don’t see stuff lol. Thanks for the place to vent 😀

    • I wondered how many others there were when i started, and again when I decided to start the web page. I get lots of traffic from people just looking for preparedness information, but some of the most popular pages are the ones answering if preparedness is Biblical and the scripture related to preparedness.

100 acres, sounds like a prepper paradise :)

  15. Diana L. says:

There are two modern day prophets who have been given info from God about what would happen between 2008 to 2020. They have posted all of their info on the web for free. Both of these men are “proven” prophetics who have a 20 year track record of accuracy. Both men were told to release the warnings right before Obama was elected.

    Terry Bennet: http://www.terrybennett.net/headlines.html

    John Paul Jackson:

John Paul released a video called the Perfect Storm in 2008. You can view this on youTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UuCHUhU9WE

There are multiple videos on youTube of these gentlemen. Check them out. They update their warnings all the time. The latest info from John Paul Jackson is that Obama will seek to the position of Secretary to the U.N. This revelation reveals why Obama is acting on all the things the U.N. is demanding of the U.S. such as banning our right to bear arms.

God says in Isaiah “Before things come to pass, I will warn you of them.” God doesn’t warn us to scare us. He warns us to prepare us. We would do well to heed His warnings rather than bury our heads in the sand and pretend that our religious liberties are not being taken away from us.

    God bless,

    • Chris Ray says:

I’m not familiar with either, thank you for sharing the links.

I agree completely that God gives us warning so we can prepare.

  16. Thank you for yor blog. I have been feeling a bit alone since having a very clear, memorable dream a month ago. I’m encouraged to learn that, though the message is clear, the actions may be symbolic and is meant to awaked me and those I share this dream with.
In the dream my husband and I drove, not far, to a 2 or 3 story building. He was wearing a suit jacket he likes and I a black dress, reserved for funerals in particular. We went up an elevator, quietly, peacefully and exited into a good-size meeting room with no furniture to speak of. About 40 others, many were couples, were lined up agains the wall around the perimeter of the room. My husband and I joined them. We were praying silently I knew. Shortly after the elevator opened and a group of soldiers in black uniforms came in with guns. They went around the room asking if we believed in God and began shooting people. I held my husband’s left hand and prepared to lay down behind him, knowing he would fall on top of me. We chose to die this way.
This dream, of course, was very unsettling. I think since then that this was a group of Christians we had been meeting with in a place other than our church, perhaps because Americans were no longer allowed to worship God and our churches were shut down or destroyed. Since the dream I have had numerous “chance” encounters with preppers, which I had never heard of. Our eyes are wide open now. We are planning to buy a piece of land and have started prepping. I have in my mind the idea that we are supposed to survive some kind of national calamity in order, as part of God’s remnant, to share the gospel and to strengthen his people during and after this. I would love to have feedback on my experiences and know if anyone else has had a dream like this. God’s blessings to all of you!
