Launch of Preparedness Retreats.com

It is with great pleasure that I announce the launch of Preparedness Retreats! I want to thank everyone who provided insight and feedback! Upon counsel with my friend, Kermit Jones, author of the Prepper Pete Prepares books, I will be applying for non-profit 501(c)(3) status. This will provide several benefits that I won’t go into. Suffice to say, I should be able to help more people at a lower cost!

At this moment, there is only one Preparedness Retreat on the calendar and that is at Camp Bethel in Wise, VA June 19-21, 2015. You can see the full class line up and purchase tickets by clicking the Wise, VA link. The price for this event is very reasonable. A day pass is only $20 for Saturday!

I will be speaking on Friday night, covering topics related to faith and preparedness; much of what I cover in the eBook, “Why should I prepare and is it Biblical?”. I’ll also cover topics like: why I believe Christians should specifically be preparing and why doing so is an act of faith.

Saturday, we will be having several classes. I will be covering the five basic needs, broken up by water and food in one class, and shelter, energy and security in another. I will also be doing a class aimed at people who are new to preparedness, giving some advice, and setting aside some time to answer specific questions. Sharon from SimplyCanning.com will be teaching a canning class. Both Sharon and I (as will some of the other instructors) will be teaching our classes twice; once before, and once after lunch. Sunday we will have breakfast, a keynote speaker and worship time together.

This event and website were put together quickly. That isn’t to say it is done shabbily. The site isn’t as nice and I had hoped it would be, and because of the late date, some vendors have had to decline. Future events will appear a little more polished, but I believe this one will still be great!

Speaking of future events, now that I have the site up and things are coming together for the event at Camp Bethel, I would like to start working with some of you who have expressed interest in assisting with putting together events near you. Please use this email for contact so that I can keep things straight. Chris (at Symbol) preparednessretreats (period) com. I am willing to travel just about anywhere, and am willing to do these retreats anywhere we can get adequate class space that has lodging nearby.

I’m really excited by how God is moving things, and by how He is blessing me by putting people in my path that are smarter than I!  I do know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so I will only make major announcements here from now on. I will be updating the blog at Preparedness Retreats. If you are interested in attending a retreat or want to help shape them, I encourage you to head on over and sign up to receive updates!

Thank you all for the prayers and encouragement. I appreciate them more than you know!

Wow and Wow! This is awesome Chris! Great Job!

Would you consider not filing the 501c… you can organize as a religious organization and still get the 501c type benefits without any of the restriction. Of course, I know you will prayerful consider all options, but many people aren’t aware that IRS code takes into account nearly identical benefits for ‘churches’ w/o them filing for the 501c3 status. I’m not a tax expert, but something to consider.

    • Chris Ray says:

I did consider it, and prayed about it. I decided not to make it a “Christian” company, though it will be operated and directed by a Christian man. Going 501 c3 gives me the ability to do a lot of things I could not do otherwise. the restrictions people are concerned about don’t really apply to me. I can still say and express my feelings on any issue, just not as the director of the company.

    • Chris, you’ve no idea how excited I am regarding this new venture! Not sure I deserve the mention, though, but I’m grateful.

Clayton, you bring up two excellent points! Yes, there are some great alternatives to 501(c). However, as you also pointed out… many people aren’t aware (which immediately creates and additional obstacle)! As well, there are tons of other resources that exist that are exclusive to 501(c) organizations (everything from a majority of grant sources, supporting foundations, fundraising regulations for other places, etc.). Not to mention there is also the option of converting to another classification later on down the road (a bit painful, but definitely doable). For now, however, a vast majority of people, businesses, and institutions are familiar and comfortable with 501(c) and what it means (and many specify that they can only donate to 501(c) organizations). And I also think Christ has several other ideas up his sleeve that will benefit in the long run. Just my .02 cent!

Regardless, I’m excited to see what God’s gonna do!

The preparedness retreat looks very interesting, but clicking on the link provided does not pull up the class line up.
If I attended I would be pulling a small travel trailer RV. Where can I find information about available camp sites, etc.
It is a stretch for me, but after reviewing your site it looks like this event might be very worthy of the effort required to make it down there. Thanks, Larry

  4. Looks like this is coming together. Prices look incredibly reasonable. I’ll be watching for when you have one closer to the Wisconsin area.

  5. Christianmomto4 says:

Have you considered taping the sessions so they can be purchased and watched online? (thinking for people who are not able to attend or maybe live far away)

    • Chris Ray says:

I have considered it, and audio may be doable, but video is out of my budget for now anyway.

  6. Wow! That is awesome Chris! Congrats. I hope it goes well for you.

  7. Catherine says:

I am so glad this is all coming together for you. God is working through you to help others.
