Our Government is Watching

Instead of the article I had planned on posting today, I want to talk to you about something that The SurvivalBlog shared on Friday. James Wesley Rawles, the owner of The SurvivalBlog, made a post called The FBI’s Cookie Caper and the VPN Imperative.

Here is the first paragraph from that post:

“It has come to my attention that from August of 2011 to November of 2011, the FBI secretly redirected the web traffic of more than 10% of SurvivalBlog’s US visitors through CJIS, their sprawling data center situated on 900 acres, 10 miles from Clarksburg, West Virginia. There, the Feebees surreptitiously collected the IP addresses of my site visitors. In all, 4,906 of 35,494 selected connections ended up going to or through the FBI servers. (Note that this happened several months before we moved our primary server to Sweden.) Furthermore, we discovered that the FBI attached a long-lived cookie that allowed them to track the sites that readers subsequently visited. I suspect that the FBI has done the same to hundreds of other web sites. I find this situation totally abhorrent, and contrary to the letter of 4th Amendment as well as the intent of our Founding Fathers.”

My Take

This saddens me. I agree with Mr. Rawles that this is an infringement on the 4th Amendment. This is not the first time the government has spied on prepper’s. Some examples can be seen in the article FBI & Homeland Security Caught Spying on Prepper Sites.

My guess is that the government is viewing prepper’s as the “fringe” that might be in our niche. The truth is that the vast majority of us are not extremists, ready to take action against anyone or anything. Most prepper’s and/or homesteaders are simply people who want to be prepared to take care of their families in times of trouble. We are patriots who love our country and do not want to depend on our government.

Mr. Rawles gives some examples of things you can do to increase your privacy when on-line. I will be doing some, if not all, of these things. If you take his suggestion of using the “VPN”, it will be an added expense. I intend to look at it as another preparation and hope you will too.

I checked my analytics and found a few visits from The Department of Homeland Security, as well as a few other government agencies. PreparedChristian is a pretty small fish in the preparedness site niche, so I don’t know that any of you were tracked, but there is a chance.

Some of you may decide to go “off grid” and no longer visit preparedness sites. I decided before I started PreparedChristian that I might draw attention to myself. I felt called by God to start this site and will keep posting for those who want to read and keep this community growing.

Some of you might be thinking “So what? If you have nothing to hide, let them look.” I have heard this argument from many on other infringements before. I used to have a similar argument. I then studied our founders and the spirit that our nation was created under. Our founders rebelled against an over-reaching king. I am not saying we should rebel, but I am saying that this is over-reaching by our government. I also agree with Mr. Rawles when he says:

“How you vote and how you “vote with your feet” (physically or virtually) are both of tremendous importance. Pray hard. Choose wisely. Act accordingly.”

Comments

  1. My feeling is this…If they come here, I will handle it. I prepare for my family. At this point there is NO extra. We can’t do it on Social Security so they would be wasting their time coming here.

I leave it all to God to handle what happens. I prepare according to what I feel God wants me to do.

If they are watching then shame on them. I pray they will leave those alone that are not looking to them for handouts, instead are doing God’s will and preparing…not hoarding…just preparing.

  2. After re-reading the Declaration of Independence, I’ve been writing in this space for 2 hours.

And I just deleted everything beautiful and powerful about my country that gives me chills when I hear a passionately-rendered version of the Star Spangled Banner. Listen to Ted Nugent.

Yes, I am afraid. Yes, I am preparing. Yes, I am a Christian.

Yesterday, I stood with the Catholics and I’m still standing with the Jews. We are them.

Let us be peaceful in our devotion to God and country; but let us not be silenced by bullies.

Our founding fathers left no uncertainty as to what they were willing to die for.

What am I willing to die for?

I’m throwing my lot in with them.

    • Chris Ray says:

Susan I don’t what you deleted, but what you posted is beautiful and powerful.

“Let us be peaceful in our devotion to God and country; but let us not be silenced by bullies.”

      Amen.

  3. hey chris,a few weeks ago,I thought that something was going on with the websites. I guess we know why they passed that exutive order. glad you passed this along thanks

    • Chris Ray says:

      Hey James,
I may have, but I can’t remember what. As for the executive order, it’s been around since the 50’s, but the timing of updating it now is curious.

      • The executive order, revised I believe 2007? eliminated the government’s right to come in your home and take what they deem needed supplies. In the ‘revised’ order signed Mar. 16, 2012 it was reinstated to include all farming impliments, machinery, and other supplies. Check under FEMA and the new order is there along with the old one…I don’t know how to link things.

In the new order there is a lot of scary stuff..it’s worded different. Sounds ‘similar’ but the change of wording makes it scary. Kinda like saying something is not not…2 negatives to make a positive…wording is the key.

  4. Don Johnson says:

“Just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean that they’re not out to get you”.

  5. I believe this incident is very indicative of where we are as a country currently and where these United States are headed.

    Prep accordingly.

  6. And just this morning I find this on another site:
The US intelligence community has risen tenfold the time it has the right to keep data on American citizens and legal residents with no established ties to terrorists. Previously all such records had to be destroyed after six months.
The new guidelines for the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), which gathers and shares information among American intelligence and law enforcement agencies, were approved on Thursday.
The previous retention period set in 2008 was “very limiting,” Robert Litt, the chief lawyer for the body which oversees the NCTC, told the Washington Post.
“On Day One, you may look at something and think that it has nothing to do with terrorism. Then six months later, all of a sudden, it becomes relevant,” he explained.
“The ability to search against these data sets for up to five years on a continuing basis as these updated guidelines permit will enable NCTC to accomplish its mission more practically and effectively,” National Intelligence Director James R. Clapper Jr. commented in a statement.
The White House said the new rules come with strong safeguards for privacy. A request to NCYC to share data mined by another agency would require a high-level review.
The news comes amid a heated debate over whether or not the fight against terrorism justifies increasingly large powers the US government wields. Human rights groups are criticizing the administration for things like indefinite detention without trial of terrorism suspects, assassination of US citizens without a court warrant, promoting citizen spying on neighbors and other policies.
Commenting on the new guidelines, some rights groups stated their concern over the increasing ability of the government to collect and distribute data on its citizens not even suspected of wrongdoing.
American Civil Liberties Union’s national security policy counsel, Michael German believes the watering down of the safeguards in counter-terrorism rules “raises significant concerns that US persons are being targeted or swept up in these collection programs and can be harmed by continuing investigations for as long as these agencies hold the data.”

“The fact that this data can be retained for five years on US citizens for whom there’s no evidence of criminal conduct is very disturbing,” Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, told AP. He added that the new guidelines undercut the Federal Privacy Act.

    • Chris Ray says:

I can understand what they mean about something being understandable when looked at a later date, with other information. The same can be said for me looking at some of the actions taken by the federal government. When you see just one or two incidents, it can raise an eyebrow. When you step back and look at many of the things that have gone on over the course of months or years, for me it is much more concerning.

  7. I am not surprised at our government, considering the direction it and the country is going. When one read prophecy the USA is not mentioned as a country. I can only assume that we are not a power to be reckoned with, so this country will decline. I believe that is what we are seeing. It pains me to say it as I love our country so much. But I believe our government is turning on the citizens, spying, taxing, taking, controlling, When a government views it own citizens as enemies then the country will decline. Of course as a country we have done allot for the Good Lord to judge us over, killing babies, killing the elderly, throwing the 10 Commandmants out of the public square, and finally tell the Lord to get out. Well, the Lord maybe leaving our country to our own vile affections. Maybe our country has been weighed in the balance and found wanting. I beleve our country is being judged by God, but I believe God warns his own of the coming judgemnt so they may prepare. We as Christians are warned, get ready, keep you heart and mind fixed on God, and memorize scriptures because, thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee. Difficult times are coming for all, but prepare for them, not only in the way of food for your bodies, but spiritual food for your soul because this will be an attack on both body, mind and spirit, until the Lord says with a shout the voice of the achangel, and wih the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first and those that are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. That is our blessed hope.

    • Chris Ray says:

I think you’re absolutely right with preparing with food, water and our spirits. There are so many that think the rapture will save them from any pain here on earth. There is no telling what kind, or how bad the pain will be, but there will be pain. This is one area where I think believers from other countries may be ahead of believers here, they have lived with pain and persecution of many kinds. Because of this they have a callous of sorts, their spiritual skin may be a bit tougher.

  8. Margaret Kiemele says:

It coming to the Word and NOTHING BUT THE WORD – we either believe the promises of protection and freedom from fear (Psalm 91) and the power in the Blood of Jesus – and put on our Armour – or not! It is a choice. Believing is a choice – Either GREATER is He that is in us or not!! The way the Blood protected the children of Israel from the angel of death – there is still “wonder working power” in the blood.”
I appreciate and enjoy this information. I see changes in government everywhere. BUT we are told in Psalm 112 – well just read it – read Psalm 91 – read about Goshen protected from the plagues – read about Rahab saving her household – read Eph. 6!! It is all there. Let’s prepare – but pray for God’s wisdom – to be “wise as serpents but gentle as doves.” I choose to STAND on the Word. I will not be shaken, I will fear no evil, and hey – even if we get shot – To live is Christ and die is gain. No matter how you look at it – we win!!! Keep readiing the Word – believing the Word – doing what Holy Spirit directs and keep looking up!! Learn to draw the blood line of Jesus around our homes, our properties, our vehciles, I even pray it around my pets and my plants. God taught me years ago – my property is my Goshen and now daily prayers and belief in the Blood Line – protects me from all evil. I Believe

  9. Joyce Shotton says:

I am more concerned than ever about our freedom after reading about the Security Defense Agency’s data storage facility in Utah scheduled to go on line in September 2013. There our government will store and analyze from international sources and all U.S. Citizens all e-mails, cell phone calls, financial records, book purchases, traffic tickets, travel itineraries, Google searches — in short, every electronic record you incur or create. Big Brother is indeed here and I, for one, may go off the grid by then. Not because I have anything to hide but just my own small way of protest. Life was simpler and happier before all this electronic mess anyway!

    • Chris Ray says:

That is very true, life was simpler before the modern age of electronics, maybe not easier, but for sure simpler.

  10. It frightens me when reports of the president is whispering to Russia’s PM to hang on til after he’s re-elected following his re-writing of the FEMA laws that say they can take anything, anytime, anyway, anywhere. This was revoked in I believe 1990? and he put it back in on Mar. 16th.2012

It’s bad enough that we are allowing God to be removed from the schools, stores, mall, and other places….however when our own government makes us afraid that is the saddest fear of all.

My God will provide and will give me the tools, the wisdom and the will to protect what He wants.

    • Chris Ray says:

Nancy, where did you see that it had been revoked in the 90’s? Do you have a link? That’s the first time I have heard that. My understanding is that this executive order has been around since 56 and updated a few times. This most recent was updated and changed many things from FEMA to The Department of Homeland Security.

Either way, I don’t like it at all.
