Prepared Christian Review of: Gerber Torch II Tanto Black

Gerber Torch II Tanto Black Serrated Edge Knife

I decided I wanted a knife for the times when I couldn’t carry my firearm, so that I would have some means to protect myself; a self-defense knife if you will. I wanted something that had a clip, so I could wear the knife inside my waistband. I wanted it to be fairly easy to open, so I could release the blade with one hand. It needed to be a good quality knife but I didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it either. I looked at many different knives at both local stores and online, eventually settling on the Gerber Torch II Tanto.

“Designed by Rick Hinderer, the Gerber Torch II features a matte black tanto blade with drop point, dual thumbstud for one-handed opening, and a finger flip that doubles as a finger guard. The partially serrated 3.5-inch blade is made of surgical-grade 7Cr17MoV stainless steel, while the stainless steel handle has machine-textured G-10 insert for an excellent grip. It includes a pocket clip for easy carry and storage as well as a lanyard attachment. The Torch II measures 8.25 inches when open and 4.75 inches when closed, and it weighs a svelte 5.7 ounces. Backed by a limited lifetime warranty.”

Price: $30 – $40

Pros:

  • I love the way this knife looks.
  •  It’s a Gerber. I actually own other Gerber products, so they’re a company I know and trust.
  • Very easy to open.
  •  I like the finger guard; it adds to a firm grip.

Cons:

  • The clip is on the wrong side for a right handed person. To better explain this, in the top picture above, the clip should be on the left side, not the right. If you have the knife clipped in your pocket or waistband, when you draw it, the blade opens into your hand, so you would need to adjust before putting it to use, which defeats the purpose of the quick draw.
  •  Some knives have the ability to move the clip to another position, not this one.
  • It is very easy to open, too easy, actually. I was wearing it inside the top, back of my pants one day, when I had to use the rest room. When I took my pants down, the blade slipped out and cut every layer of skin for about two inches on the top of my right calf. I got lucky; it could have easily cut my calf in two.

My Take

I’m obviously unhappy with the purchase, but I am inclined to believe that the opening problem is a problem with this specific knife and not with Gerber. As I mentioned I own other Gerber products and have always been happy with them.

I looked at several stores near me for a self-defense knife and didn’t see one that was in my price range that I cared for, so I ended up buying it on line. If I would have been able to put my hands on it, I may not have noticed that it opened too easily, but I would have noticed that it opened on the wrong side, and wouldn’t have purchased it.

Even though I didn’t return it, I should have. I give this knife one star.

 My Take

There are some books in our niche that cover a wide range of topics and skills that I look at as a type of prepper “handbook”.  While you could, they aren’t necessarily the type of book you would sit down and read cover to cover.  They are, however, the type of book you would want to have “just in case”.  This is one of those books.  I mean, it even has “Family Preparedness Handbook” in the title.  LOL

It has something for every level of prepper, whether you’re just starting out and looking for help on what to do next, or have been prepping for years and want to see where you may have holes.  This book has many preparedness check lists, charts on many different types of preparedness/survival gear as well as a lot of recipes using storage food.  There is information to help you get prepared, as well as useful information if you are in a survival situation.

I own a hard copy of this book but like the idea of the PDF version as well.  If I was only getting one copy, it would be a hard copy.  The time you might need it is when the power is out.  You could get the PDF version and print out the pages you want to have a hard copy of.

I think this is one book that should be in your prepper library and I give it 5 stars.  The only drawback to this book is the price, but it is so loaded with information that I think it is worth every penny.

Prepared Christian Book Review: The Gift of Fear

The Gift of Fear and Other Survival Signals that Protect Us From Violence,

by Gavin de Becker

Book Description from the Publisher:

True fear is a gift. Unwarranted fear is a curse. Learn how to tell the difference.

A date won’t take “no” for an answer. The new nanny gives a mother an uneasy feeling. A stranger in a deserted parking lot offers unsolicited help. The threat of violence surrounds us every day. But we can protect ourselves, by learning to trust—and act on—our gut instincts.

In this empowering book, Gavin de Becker, the man Oprah Winfrey calls the nation’s leading expert on violent behavior, shows you how to spot even subtle signs of danger—before it’s too late. Shattering the myth that most violent acts are unpredictable, de Becker, whose clients include top Hollywood stars and government agencies, offers specific ways to protect yourself and those you love, including…how to act when approached by a stranger…when you should fear someone close to you…what to do if you are being stalked…how to uncover the source of anonymous threats or phone calls…the biggest mistake you can make with a threatening person…and more. Learn to spot the danger signals others miss. It might just save your life.

My Take:

I have had this book for a while but only recently started reading it. For full disclosure, I have not completed it yet. I am so thoroughly impressed that I believe this book should be required reading for everyone, especially women. I think it is important enough that I am going to give away five copies! See “how to enter” for a chance to win a copy.

Mr. De Becker is correct; true fear is a gift. In this book he explains how it is used as a weapon. He explains the signals to look for when men use ploys to get their way and when they won’t take no for an answer. This book will help you better understand threats, how they are used and why context matters.

Violence in the workplace, domestic violence, stalking and violence by children are all explored. You will be given example after example of why paying attention to one’s gut is critical. This brings me to my one complaint about the book; Mr. De Becker credits nature and evolution for this, I credit God. Just because he doesn’t give credit to God, doesn’t take away from the fact that he knows what he is talking about.

I wouldn’t say that I enjoyed this book, it’s too dark a topic to enjoy, but it is important and if I had a daughter, this book would be required reading.

I give this book 5 stars.

Prepared Christian Gear Review: Motorola T5320 FRS Radio

The Motorola TalkAbout T5320
are one of the models of Motorola’s FRS (Family Service Radio) radios.

The technical details are:

  • 14-channel FRS 2-way radio
  • up to 2-mile range
  • 5 audible call tones; talk confirmation tone
  • Battery meter indicator with audible low battery alert; backlit LCD
  •  Removable faceplate; removable swivel belt clip; single-pin audio accessory connector
  • Rechargeable capable with optional accessory upgrade kit

Most FRS radios claim far more range than they actually get. In my experience, these are no different. If the land was flat, with not so much as a gnat in between, they might have the two mile range.

We used them when the kids were younger and went out to play. This way we could keep in contact if needed and they could radio to let us know if they were going somewhere other than where they had originally told us.

When the kids were a little older we let them go about a mile away with friends to McDonalds. We asked them to radio when they got there and again before they left. Our radio keyed up when they got there, but we couldn’t understand a word they said, and they said they radioed before they left, but we didn’t hear a chirp.

Because they worked for the main reason we purchased them, I am giving them three stars. If you need something with longer range than a few blocks, I would suggest looking at another radio.

Prepared Christian Book Review of: All New Square Foot Gardening

The book All New Square Foot Gardening, Second Edition by Mel Bartholomew, was recommended on many forums that I visit. When we decided to put in a garden, it was one of the first books we ordered. I helped my parents in the garden as a child but haven’t had a garden of my own. This book is an excellent resource for those with little to no gardening experience as well as those who are new to square foot or raised bed gardening. For those who don’t know, the biggest difference between raised bed and square foot gardening is that in square foot gardening, you section off the raised beds, using 1 foot by 1 foot sections.

As I mentioned, the book is an excellent resource and came with me every time I planted. It explains how to make the beds, trellises, mesh coverings and explains how to section the beds. It also gives information on vegetables, fruits and some popular plants and flowers, such as growing season, seed to harvest and whether seeds can be started indoors or not. Mel also gives tips on starting, growing, harvesting and preparing as well as some other hints and tips.

Since this type of gardening was new to me, I appreciated that there were charts for spacing of numerous vegetables. The back of the book is loaded with charts that give the planting schedule from last frost to the first frost for numerous vegetables.

There were a few things that I either modified or wish I would have. First is the trellis that I mentioned yesterday. The way I came up with just seems so much sturdier to me. Either way will work, but the trellis I came up with can be taken down at the end of harvest and used again the next year with no extra effort. Second is “Mel’s mix”, he recommends that 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 Peat Moss and 1/3 Coarse Vermiculite be mixed together and added to the beds. I had quite a few boxes and this mix was just too expensive. I ended up buying a yard of black dirt, a few big bags of Peat Moss and a bunch of compost, which worked just fine. When bringing in black dirt, there is a danger of bringing in weeds with it, but if your mulch is thick enough, you don’t have to worry about weeds.

The last thing is something I really wish he hadn’t recommended; lining the bottom of the boxes with garden fabric. I’m sure the thought was to keep weeds from coming through underneath, but as I mentioned, if you mulch thick enough, weeds aren’t a bother. Having the bottoms lined also stops beneficial bugs, worms and other organisms from coming up into the box from the bottom. Most importantly, it keeps your roots from going any deeper than the boxes’ depth. He recommends using 2×6 lumber, which simply isn’t deep enough for some plants.

I give the book 4 stars despite my three complaints. This book is a must have for any newbie to raised bed or square foot gardening. When I figure out what I am going to do with my yard, it’ll go back out with me to plant.

Prepared Christian Movie Review: Contagion

Contagion is a movie that follows the first few weeks of a pandemic as it sweeps across the globe, with a large focus in Minnesota, the state I actually live in. There are several big names in this movie: Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude law and Kate Winslet, among others.

****Spoiler Alert****
If you haven’t seen the movie, parts of it will be discussed below.

This movie is well researched and is the closest depiction of what I think a pandemic will look like, including the societal impact. It shows the effect at the worldwide level as the WHO (World Health Organization) races to find patient zero, at the national level following the concerns of Homeland Security and at the CDC and the local level following the family of patient zero.

Within hours, the viral perfect storm takes off and the illness quickly begins to spread worldwide. Several health organizations begin to scramble to find a vaccine. They explain that in order to find a vaccine, they have to be able to reproduce it, test it and then obtain approval from the FDA, all of which could take three months or more.

Within two to three weeks the government declares martial law, airports are shut down, and citizens are not allowed to travel from state to state, in an attempt to slow the morbidity rate. These events have several consequences; there is a run on banks, grocery stores are stripped bare, garbage pickup is stopped and the streets are littered with trash bags.

If I remember correctly the morbidity rate was one in twelve, the mortality rate was one in four. They estimated that as many as seventy million would die worldwide and two million five hundred thousand would die in America.

While this movie won’t win any awards for the feel good movie of the year, I do recommend watching it. I watched it as “homework”; I put my family in the situation and looked for where any holes in our preps and plans are.

The acting was good, the musical score was horrible, the story line was believable, and I actually have seen the movie twice so I am going to give it 4 stars.

Prepared Christian Gear Review: 5.11 ATAC L1 Flashlight

5.11 TMT L1 Flashlight, 212 Lumens, Black

I have been looking for an EDC flashlight for a while. My list of requirements:

    • Length of 3-4. I don’t wear gear on my belt, so the flashlight has to go in a pocket with other EDC gear. It has to be small enough to fit in the pocket and not take up all of the room, yet big enough to have some power to it.
    • High Lumen count, preferably over 100. I want to be able to disorient someone if needed, by shining a very bright light in their eyes.
    •  Sturdy construction; it has to stand up to an occasional drop from Mr. Bumblehands.

Here are the specs for the 5.11 TMT L1 Flashlight, the one I decided on.

Product Specifications:

· Length: 3.9” (99.4mm)
· Max. Diameter: 1.1” (26.7mm)
· Body Diameter: 1.0” (24.3mm)
· Product Weight: 2.1oz (59g)
· Weight w. Battery: 2.6oz (75g)
· Aerospace Grade Aluminum
· CR123A Duracell® Battery Included
· Regulated Circuit for Maximum Output
· Cree® XP-G LED
· Gold Plated Contacts
· Intelligent Switch w. High/Low/Strobe
· Momentary-On Switch
· Rotary Dial Lock-Out Switch
· Stamped Metal Pocket Clip
· Black TPR Soft Touch Anti-Roll Ring
· Break-Away Lanyard Included
· Water Resistant Construction

My Take:

Pros

  • Length of 3.9” This flashlight is the perfect size for me, fits perfectly in my fist and doesn’t take up my entire pocket. While it does fit great in my pocket, it’s about half an inch too short to use as a striking implement.
  • At 173 lumens this flashlight is incredibly bright. I decided that if I was going to depend on this as part of my self-defense tool kit that I needed to try it on myself first. I had my wife shine it in my eyes in a well lit room. It was darn bright but it alone wouldn’t stop any threat. A quick flash in the eyes would be enough of a distraction to allow a strike. I haven’t tested this at night, but my guess is that if one’s eyes were adjusted to the dark, this would be much more effective as a distraction. The dim setting is sufficient for most normal flashlight use, while the bright setting would be helpful in some and overkill for others.
  • While I haven’t dropped the light yet, the design and construction create a very sturdy feel.

Cons

  • I would prefer the clip higher on the frame so that less of the light stuck out of the pocket.
  • The cost of this flashlight is a bit high.

I have looked at many tactical flash lights. Prices range from $50-$200 and this light is in the $70 range. While this flashlight does meet every requirement I had, I had a hard time justifying spending that much on myself, so I put it on my Christmas list. Because it met all of my requirements and is high quality I am going to give it 4 stars.

Prepared Christian Review of: Lights Out, by David Crawford

Lights Out was originally written chapter by chapter and posted to the “Patriot Fiction” section of a popular preparedness forum. The story begins with an event that completely shuts down all electronics and follows the main character, his family, friends and neighborhood.

I have read a few books that deal with this or similar themes and I think this one is the closest to what I think would really happen. Many stories in this genre depict complete societal meltdown quickly after the “event”. In Lights Out, things do melt down, but more slowly as people realize that life as they knew it, is gone.

I identified with the main character; a man who has faults and weaknesses but who stands up and fights for what he believes. This makes him a reluctant leader in his neighborhood. The neighborhood has some internal struggles but bands together overall to provide the essential needs for survival for their entire neighborhood.

It’s not a how-to manual per se but there is helpful information in this book if you pay attention to how the characters cope with the new post-grid world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It is the best piece of “patriot fiction” or novel in this genre I have read. I give it five stars.

Prepared Christian Review of: Allen Company Shooting Glasses

When I began shooting, I bought ear muffs and the cheapest clear safety goggles I could find. I had seen other shooters using the tinted glasses and didn’t think I would like the yellow or red tint. That was until I went shooting with a friend who let me try his pair of yellow tinted glasses on. I could not believe how much they made things pop out. The tint did take a little bit to get used to, but it was worth it. I purchased the Allen Company Adult Blade 4 Lens Style Combo Case (Clear, Red, Yellow, Smoke). If you’re looking for eye protection, I recommend these. I have seen other more expensive shooting eye protection and they often only come in the one tint. I like the ability to change the lenses out, which is fairly easy and straight forward.

Review of: The Big Berkey Water Purifier

Big Berkey Stainless Steel Water Filtration System with 2 Black Filter Elements

My wife and I have read reports of prescription drugs being found in drinking water. One of the tax return purchases we made this year was a water purification system. I have also heard some concerning things about fluoride in water. I don’t know if they are true but sodium fluoride, which is used in some municipalities to treat water, is one component used in rat poison. We decided to get a purification system that would take prescription drugs, fluoride and any of the other junk that is in our water out.

Side note: Fluoride might be fine topically as it is tooth paste, but I can’t see the benefit of ingesting it.

After plenty of research I settled on the Big Berkey. One of the complaints I have heard about the Berkey systems is the price. While true, there is a higher upfront cost, the filters last a LOT longer than some other popular pitcher type purifiers. Here is a water filter comparison chart. It shows the Berkey costing just 1.9 cents per gallon. The next closest is 9.6 cents per gallon.

Pros

•The Big Berkey can take four filters, but we opted to just put two in, mostly due to cost. Four would have increased the purification rate and extended the amount of water the entire system could purify before needing to replace the filters.

•The system is nice to look at; I mean who doesn’t like polished stainless steel? Mine is pictured below.

•Set up was fairly easy. If memory serves, there is an extra step or two to be done for the fluoride filters but nothing that requires rocket science.

•The biggest pro to me is knowing that we have pure water; no smells, no prescription drugs, no chlorine and no fluoride.

Cons

•The Big Berkey is a little slow. The fuller it is the faster it filters because more filter space is being utilized.

•There is another filter needed for each of the black filters if you want the fluoride removed. At least you have the option if you want it.

•Remembering to refill it..oh wait, that’s just me.

My Take:

I like the Big Berkey and happily give it 4 starts. I would give it 5 if the black filters removed fluoride.
